S. gedanensis ATCC 4880 produced 7 olivanic acids, MM 4550 [12795-21-0], MM 17880 (I) [61036-81-5], MM 22380 (II) [63582-78-5], MM 22381 [63599-16-6], MM 22382 [65376-20-7], MM 22383 [65322-98-7], and MM 13902 [57459-82-2], by fermentation of a medium containing glycerol, soybean flour, and mineral salts. The ratio of sulfated to nonsulfated derivatives was determined by the presence or absence of Na2SO4 in the medium. The production of these low-mol.-weight β-lactamase inhibitors was unexpected, because S. gedanensis ATCC 4880 is known to produce KA 107, a high-mol.-weight β-lactamase inhibitor.
