MMI Named One of Fast Company’s 2023 “World’s Most Innovative Companies”

2023-03-02
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MMI, (Medical Microinstruments, Inc.), a robotics company dedicated to improving clinical outcomes for patients undergoing microsurgery, today announced it has been named to Fast Company’s prestigious annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2023, earning the No. 2 spot in the Medical Devices category. This year’s list highlights the businesses at the forefront of their respective industries, paving the way for the innovations of tomorrow.
MMI was recognized for its state-of-the-art Symani® Surgical System, which has the smallest wristed instruments in the surgical robotics market. The instruments are designed to improve a surgeon’s ability to access and suture small, delicate anatomy, and the robotic platform is designed to reduce surgeon fatigue and overcome the complexities and challenges of microsurgery by reducing tremors and scaling down the surgeon’s hand movements while maintaining the natural dexterity of the wrist. This would allow surgeons to make precise micro-movements, which is essential when performing complex anastomotic work.
“We are honored to be recognized by Fast Company for our continued momentum as we work to help minimize the challenges of manual microsurgery with a technology that has potential in numerous clinical applications,” said Mark Toland, Chief Executive Officer of MMI. “Our ultimate goal is to increase patient access to specialists who perform microsurgical procedures, enable treatments for previously untreatable conditions, and improve care outcomes to restore patients’ quality of life. This achievement is further validation of the hard work the MMI team is doing to usher in the next frontier in surgical robotics.”
Microsurgery is the manipulation or suturing of very small anatomy such as arteries, veins, ducts, or nerves. These procedures require high visual magnification and specialized precision instruments as well as advanced fine motor skills. Supermicrosurgery is microsurgery on an even smaller scale. Symani is designed to enable this delicate work by adding precision that not every surgeon can achieve, even with extensive training, when manually suturing extremely small vessels.
Currently, throughout Europe, the Symani Surgical System is being applied in reconstructive plastic surgeries, lymphatic surgeries, orthopedic surgeries and head and neck surgeries. MMI is working to expand indications and to support ongoing commercialization efforts for the Symani Surgical System in Europe, where it received CE Mark certification in 2019.
“What a strange and thrilling year it has been to honor this year’s Most Innovative Companies. This year’s list compiles some of the most cutting-edge groundbreakers who are changing our world every single day, from legacy organizations like McDonald’s to upstarts like MrBeast and institutions such as NASA. Everyone on this list does something completely, uniquely different, yet, they all have one thing in common: innovation,” said Fast Company editor-in-chief Brendan Vaughan.
The World’s Most Innovative Companies is Fast Company’s signature franchise and one of its most highly anticipated editorial efforts of the year. It provides a firsthand look at the inspiring and innovative efforts of companies across all sectors of the economy. MMI was included on the list for its efforts to change the landscape of microsurgery to make it more accessible and broaden its applications.
About MMI
MMI (Medical Microinstruments, Inc.) was founded in 2015 near Pisa, Italy to enhance surgical performance through the development of a robotic system that enables surgeons to achieve better outcomes in microsurgery. The Symani® Surgical System combines proprietary innovations including the world’s smallest wristed microinstruments as well as tremor-reducing and motion-scaling technologies. Together, these powerful capabilities are designed to allow more surgeons to successfully perform microsurgery while expanding the field of supermicrosurgery. The Symani System is CE Marked and commercially available in Europe. In the United States, the system is not approved or cleared for commercial use. MMI is backed by international medtech investors including Andera Partners, BioStar, Deerfield Management, Fountain Healthcare Partners, Panakès Partners, RA Capital, Sambatech, and Wellington Partners.
