AI in healthcare
Bupa’s Diana Kennedy says the world's first Global AI Safety Summit is a chance to accelerate progress in healthcare, but there are potential downsides
The world's first-ever Global AI Safety Summit has started at Bletchley Park, England, the birthplace of the computer.
The summit is aiming to bring together global leaders and technology experts to discuss in detail appropriate regulations for AI technology. As reported by AI Digital, the summit will focus on addressing the potential misuse of AI by malicious individuals, including cyberattacks and bioweapon development, as well as the risks associated with the loss of AI control.
The healthcare sector is especially keen on seeing what AI can do for the industry and how framework can protect healthcare.
Bupa: a strict framework in AI-driven healthcare innovation
Diana Kennedy is the Group Chief Technology Officer Bupa, which runs private healthcare insurance, clinics, hospitals and care homes, with a revenue of £12bn (US$14bn).
Kennedy says that while the advantages of AI are enormous, the healthcare sector specifically needs a strict framework to protect itself.
“AI is revolutionising healthcare and is starting to play a vital role in empowering customers to look after their own health, enabling earlier, more precise interventions before more serious symptoms arise. We’re already seeing signs of this in some of the ways we’re using AI in Bupa. For example, in our Spanish business, customers can access an AI powered mental health service via an app called BluaU. It uses data points to analyse the customer’s mental health and AI to provide personalised suggestions on how to manage it based on the characteristics of the data they’ve shared.”
But Kennedy says that while advancements in AI have been huge, some challenges surrounding the technology need to be addressed before its potential within healthcare is achieved.
“Any future development and deployment of AI in healthcare should be guided by ethical guidelines and regulations,” she says.
Kennedy says that it is essential that all healthcare workers are upskilled on the technology, especially customer-facing clinical staff who can spot where the biggest impacts to customers’ health can be made.
“To spark innovation in this field, we’ve launched a global hackathon event that’s open to all 80,000 employees called, B Disruptive, which is aiming to upskill as many colleagues as possible in generative AI and unlock their ideas to provide better experiences for our customers.
“AI is an advanced set of capabilities which can accelerate human progress in healthcare. We need to work together to ensure we create an environment that nurtures the possibilities of AI and encourages innovation, while at the same time continuing to set strict frameworks that limit the potential hazards and downsides.”
