150 μA 18F− target and beam port upgrade for the IBA 18/9 cyclotron

A high power (∼3 kW) target platform has been developed for the IBA 18/9 cyclotron.New designs for the airlock, collimator and target subsystems have been fabricated and deployed.The primary project goal is reliable com. production of 18F- at 150 μA or greater, while secondary goals include improving serviceability and extending service intervals relative to OEM systems.Reliable operation in a production environment has been observed at beam currents up to 140 μA.Challenges include ion source lifetime and localized peaking in the beam intensity distribution.(c) 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Visual observation of boiling in high power liquid target

A top pressurized, batch style, 3.15 mL total volume (2.5 mL fill volume) water target with transparent viewing windows was operated on an IBA 18/9 cyclotron at 18 MeV proton energy and beam power up to 1.1 kW.Video recordings documented bubble formation and transport, and blue light from de-excitation of water mols. produced images of proton beam stopping geometry including location of the Bragg peak.(c) 2012 American Institute of Physics.
