The AKJ Process for converting tar-decanter sludge and other tar wastes into a pumpable fuel comprises a primary processing tank into which the wastes are added along with a prescribed amount of diluent to bring the finished product to a specified viscosity.A chopper grinding pump reduces the size of the particulate matter and mixes the solution into a homogeneous liquid with a normal viscosity in the range of Number 6 oil.This product can then be transferred to a fuel holding tank or further processed in a secondary processing tank to further reduce particulate size in cases of more critical fuel specifications.The finished AKJ product can also be used as an open hearth fuel, a blast furnace fuel, a coal additive, or in recycle to a tar product.

The use of tar-decanter and coal tar sludges from coke manufacture (transformed by AKJ process in pumpable fuel) in open-hearth and blast furnaces, and as additive to coal in metallurgy is described.The use of hazardous tar wastes in metallurgy eliminates the storage and disposal difficulties and results in fuel savings.
