Development of Turbine Driven Coring System for Hard Rock Sampling

Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is developing a unique wireline retrievable coring tool for sampling of rocks below the deep sea floor. This tool is mainly composed of a turbine motor, a piston/cylinder, an inner tube. A cutting shoe at the bottom of the inner tube is rotated at high speed by the turbine motor and it trims cores. The advantage of applying the turbine motor is that the coring with high rotating speed and low weight on bit is possible compared with conventional coring and it is expected to be effective to improve the core recovery rate and core quality especially for hard fractured rock or interbedded hard / soft formations. This paper presents outline of this tool and several test results on shore.
