Involved in glycerolipid synthesis and lipid metabolism. Catalyzes the formation of diacylglycerol, the precursor of triacylglycerol, by transferring the acyl chain of a fatty acyl-CoA to a monoacylglycerol, mainly at the sn-1 or sn-3 positions. It uses both sn-2-monoacylglycerol (2-acylglycerol) and sn-1-monoacylglycerol (1-acyl-sn-glycerol) equally well as substrates, and uses sn-3-monoacylglycerol (3-acyl-sn-glycerol) with lower efficiency. Probably not involved in absorption of dietary fat in the small intestine.

Comparison of Meat Quality, Including Fatty Acid Content and Amino Acid Profile, and Transcriptome Profile among Hanwoo, Korea Black Cattle, and Jeju Black Cattle

This study aimed to compare the meat quality, including fatty acid content, amino acid profile, and transcriptome profile, among three Korean cattle breeds: Hanwoo, Korean black cattle (KBC), and Jeju black cattle (JBC). We analyzed fatty acid compositions, revealing that Hanwoo had higher levels of saturated fatty acids such as pentadecanoic acid, palmitic acid, and margaric acid than other cattle breeds. In contrast, KBC showed higher levels of linolenic acid, which is one of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Free amino acid profiles showed that Hanwoo and JBC had significantly higher levels of glutamic acid, glycine, and phenylalanine compared to KBC. KBC had a significantly higher arginine content, while Hanwoo had a significantly higher serine content compared to the other two breeds. Regarding constituent amino acid content, JBC had a higher glutamic acid content, which is associated with umami, and exhibited a lower level of valine, arginine, isoleucine, and phenylalanine compared to the other breeds. RNA transcriptome analysis identified key differentially expressed genes involved in lipid metabolism and energy homeostasis, including MOGAT1, ANGPTL8, and SLC38A4. Network analysis highlighted substantial differences in muscle system processes, fat cell differentiation, and other pathways between the breeds. These findings provide foundational data for genetic selection programs aimed at enhancing meat quality and offer valuable insights into preserving the unique characteristics of Korean indigenous cattle.

Molecular insights into the lipid‐carbohydrates metabolism switch under the endurance effort in Arabian horses

AbstractBackgroundRecent studies have shown that in Arabian horse muscle, long‐term exercise‐induced expression of genes related to fatty acid degradation and the downregulation of genes belonging to the glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and insulin signalling pathways. Long‐lasting physical exertion may trigger the metabolism to switch the main energy source from carbohydrates to lipids due to higher caloric content.ObjectivesTo describe the metabolism adaptation at the whole transcriptome of blood to endurance effort in Arabian horses.Study designIn vivo experiment.MethodsVenous blood samples from 10 Arabian horses were taken before and after a 120 km long endurance ride to isolate the RNA and perform the high‐throughput NGS transcriptome sequencing.ResultsThe results, including KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes) and GO (Gene Ontology) analyses, allowed us to describe the most significantly upregulated—ARV1, DGAT2, LIPE, APOA2, MOGAT1, MOGAT2, GYS1, GYS2 and downregulated—ACACA, ACACB, FADS1, FADS2 genes involved in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Also, the increased expression of RAF1, KRAS and NRAS genes involved in the Insulin pathway and PI3K–Akt was shown.Main limitationsLimited sample size, Arabians used for endurance racing were not compared to Arabians from other equestrian disciplines.ConclusionsThis general insight into the processes described supports the thesis of the lipid‐carbohydrates metabolism switch in endurance Arabian horses and provides the basis for further research.

Polymorphisms of PLIN1 and MOGAT1 genes and their association with feed efficiency in Hu sheep

Feed cost accounts for a high proportion of sheep production, and improving sheep's utilization of feed will reduce production costs and improve economic benefits. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression characteristics of PLIN1 and MOGAT1 genes and the relationship between their polymorphisms and feed efficiency traits in Hu sheep, and to find molecular Genetic marker that can be used in breeding. The expression levels of PLIN1 and MOGAT1 genes in various tissues were determined using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The results showed that PLIN1 and MOGAT1 genes were widely expressed in heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys, rumen, duodenum, muscle, lymph, and tail fat. The PLIN1 gene had the highest expression level in in the tail fat compared to the other nine tissues. The expression levels of MOGAT1 gene in liver, tail fat, lung and heart was significantly higher than in kidney, muscle and lymph. The expression level of MOGAT1 was lowest in muscle compared to the other tissues (heart, liver, spleen, lung, rumen and tail fat). We recorded the body weight (BW80 and BW180) and feed intake (FI) information of 985 male Hu sheep at 80 and 180 days of age, and calculated the daily average feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), and feed conversion rate (FCR) from 80 to 180 days of age. Two intronic mutations, g.18517910 A > G and g.224856118 G > C, were identified in PLIN1 and MOGAT1 genes by PCR amplification and Sanger sequencing. MassARRAY ® SNP detection technology was used to genotype the DNA of 985 Hu sheep and analyze its association with feed efficiency traits. The results showed that the SNP g.18517910 A > G was significantly associated with BW80, BW180, FI, ADFI and FCR (P < 0.05), while SNP g.2248561118 G > C was significantly associated with FCR (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, significant differences were also observed in different combinations of genotypes (P < 0.05). Therefore, these two polymorphic loci can serve as candidate molecular markers for improving feed utilization efficiency in Hu sheep.
