Forty-six acridines (cf. Surrey, et al., C.A. 47, 4884i) and 7 acridones (cf. Archer, et al., C.A. 49, 3968e) were tested against Streptococcus faecalis in the presence of limiting amounts of folic acid.Ten of the acridines and 5 of the acridones inhibited growth, but the concentrations required were 1000 (or more) times greater than inhibiting concentrations of aminopterin, amethopterin, and pyrimethamine. The inhibiting action of a few of the acridines and acridones could be overcome by addition of citrovorum factor, thymine, or thymidine. The antimalarial quinacrine and the antibacterial Entozon were not inhibiting. The antibacterial 5-aminoacridine was inhibitory whether the limiting nutrilite was folic acid, citrovorum factor, thymine, or thymidine.
