Hires Healthcare AI company Anumana welcomed Maulik Nanavaty as its new CEO. He joined the company after 18 years at Boston Scientific, where he most recently served as the senior vice president and president of neuromodulation. Jeff Smith took the helm as the new CEO of healthcare technology company Bamboo Health. Before Bamboo, Smith held several leadership positions at Lumeris, a value-based care managed services operator for health systems. Before that, he spent more than six years in leadership positions at CVS, including vice president of accountable care and population health and vice president of M&A and corporate strategy. Etherna, a biotech company advancing RNA medicine, named Bernard Sagaert as its permanent CEO — he had been interim CEO for more than a year. Goodbill, a startup focused on helping patients pay less for care, appointed Andy McGarvey as its chief revenue officer. Prior to joining Goodbilll, McGarvey most recently served as executive vice president of strategic account management at healthcare payment company Zelis. Before that, he was vice president of strategic accounts at UnitedHealth Group. Health Assurance Transformation Corporation (HATCo), which was launched by General Catalyst this month, selected Marc Harrison as its CEO. Previously he served as the CEO of Intermountain Health and the chief of international business at Cleveland Clinic. Humana appointed Jim Rechtin to take over as CEO after Bruce Broussard steps down from the role in the second half of next year. Retchin currently serves as the CEO of national medical group Envision Healthcare. LCMC Health in New Orleans welcomed Anthony Cunningham as its new chief revenue officer. He joined LCMC from North Carolina-based Advocate Health, where he held various revenue cycle leadership roles. NewAmsterdam Pharma named Ian Somaiya as its new CFO. He most recently served as CFO and chief business officer of Elucida Oncology. Prior to that, he was CFO of TCR2 Therapeutics. Tim Wentworth took over as Walgreens’ CEO following the departure of Rosalind Brewer. He’s a seasoned healthcare leader — some of his previous roles include founding CEO of Evernorth and CEO of Express Scripts. Promotions Centene named Wade Rakes as chief growth officer. He is being promoted from his role as plan president and CEO of Peach State Health Plan, which is Centene’s Georgia subsidiary. Hackensack Meridian promoted Jose Lozano to the role of chief growth officer. Before, he had been serving as the New Jersey-based health system’s senior vice president of strategic business partnerships. Intermountain Health promoted Clay Ashdown to the position of CFO. He has been working at the Utah-based health system for 23 years. UnitedHealthcare promoted Colleen Van Ham to CEO of the company’s dental and vision divisions, and it promoted Marcus Robinson to CEO of its individual and family plans business. Both leaders have been with UnitedHealthcare for nearly 20 years. Exits Two executives left Centene’s C-suite after less than a year in their positions. Mark Brooks, the insurer’s former chief technology and transformation officer, exited his role to become the new CIO of Reinsurance Group of America. Centene’s former chief customer experience officer, Anika Gardenhire, left her position to become the first chief digital and information officer at Ardent Health Services. Clay Holderman, the former CEO of Midwest-based health system UnityPoint Health, announced that he was exiting his role the same day the organization called off a planned merger with Presbyterian Health Services. Scott Kizer, UnityPoint’s former chief legal officer, has taken over the CEO position. Layoffs Nomad Health, a platform for travel nurses, cut its staff by 25%. This comes after a round of layoffs that eliminated 17% of its workforce in February. North Carolina-based Novant Health laid off 160 employees who were mostly in management and administrative positions. Plume, a startup that provides online healthcare services to trans people, laid off more than two dozen workers. ProMedica announced plans to lay off 122 employees who work at its home health agency in Sylvania, Ohio. Reata Pharmaceuticals, a rare disease drugmaker recently acquired by Biogen, said it will eliminate 113 positions in late November. Sana Biotechnology laid off nearly 30% of its workforce. This follows a round of layoffs that eliminated 15% of the company’s staff last November.
