Progress on synthesis of a novel oral contraceptive drospirenone for women

A review.Drospirenone, developed by Schering AG, is a synthetic progestogen that behaves similarly to the natural hormone progestin.Yasmin, as a novel oral contraceptive for women, is a combined pill of drospirenone and low-dose ethinylestradiol which possesses contraceptive efficacy and maintains good cycle control.Yasmin offers other clin. advantages such as weight control, etc.Since its first launch in Europe 2000, Yasmin becomes the best-selling oral contraceptive pills for women.This review summarized the development progress of the synthesis route for drospirenone, including process with microorganism participation and pure chem. process.It is reported that microbial route is good in stereo-selection and achieves high yield.With the development of organic synthesis technol., more and more pure chem. synthesis routes of drospirenone preferably in stereo-selection and higher yield will be reported in the future.
