9-(2-Hydroxyethyl) adenine was prepared from ethylene carbonate and adenine with recycling of DMF solvent.

The synthesis of L-(+)-alaninol was described.L-Alanine, as starting material, was esterified with thionyl chloride and ethanol.The ester formed was reduced by zinc borohydride and hydrolyzed with sodium hydroxide to yield the title compound with 60% overall yield and 99% content.Zinc borohydride was prepared by the reaction of potassium borohydride and anhydrous zinc chloride.

An improved procedure for preparation of the title compound (I) is presented.Condensation of 2,3,4-trifluoro-nitrobenzene with 2-hydroxymethyl-2-methyl-1,3-dioxane followed by hydrolysis to give I with a yield of 90%.
