During my tenure as the Chair of the WCC, I had the privilege of working with an extraordinarily talented and committed team of women chemist leaders to lead a transformational change of the WCC. During those years, we developed a new vision for the WCC, including a new strategic direction and mission. The new mission: "The WCC will be leaders in attracting, developing, and recognizing women chemists in the ACS." This mission drove powerful changes in the WCC, including a new subcommittee structure focus, new projects, and programs. There were significant strides in expanding the WCC-Lilly Travel Awards ("Attracting"), production of both a Mid-Career Women Chemists Workshop, as well as the Women in Industry Breakfast ("Developing"), and a major effort to increase the number of women receiving ACS National Awards ("Recognizing"). It also started new traditions relative to the WCC Luncheons held at National Meetings. The key learning from all of this: having a strong, inspirational, noble vision can rally and energize transformational change. For the WCC, it empowered a team of women leaders to completely change the dynamic and contributions of the WCC in the ACS.
